Sponge Iron
Sponge iron, popular as (DRI) in the iron and steel trade, is a high-purity iron produced by directly reducing iron ore by reducing gases. The process must take place in a modern furnace without coke usage.
The metal has a spongy structure due to voids built within it. It is typically used as a raw material, while steel is made in electric arc furnaces. Sponge iron production is preferred over conventional processes for its environmental and energy efficiency advantages.
